Making Women
Visible is a new project of SPARROW funded by
Mama Cash, Amsterdam. Through this project we aim
to document the work done by women's organisations
by initiating a documentation, dissemination, communication
and information process. SPARROW has always felt
the need for such a project which will enable us
to collect, archive, and compile information related
to various organisations working on women's issues
and keep it under one roof and share the material
in a way that it increases the visibility of the
work done by various organisations, gives easier
accessibility and also helps to foster meaningful
connections. We feel that this process of collection
and dissemination is the first step towards consolidating
the collective gains made by the women's movement
in India and that it will help immensely in opening
up a new dialogue and also stress the proactive
role of an archives in the development process.
This project will operate at many levels including
collection of the various outreach material brought
out by the organisations, information about their
resource persons, photo documentation and audiovisual
documentation. The information thus collected will
be then be shared in various ways through our various
outreach programmes like networking with students
and other organisations, newsletter, publications
and the website.

Aalochana, which means critical review, was set up as a non-profit resource centre for women in 1989 at Pune, Maharashtra. Their point of departure has been to re-examine and re-evaluate their lives, their experiences, their skills and their beliefs. Through research and documentation of all aspects of women's lives, especially of poor and low caste women, women's groups and organisations, they wish to redefine their perceptions and lives and visualise a future that will be emancipatory for all.
Objectives:
- To collect and provide information on issues related to the social, political, economic, legal and personal aspects of women's lives.
- To document and research various aspects of women's lives.
- To disseminate the results of research and documentation through pamphlets, booklets, posters, slides, audio and video cassettes, films, lectures, seminars and camps.
- To network with women's groups, libraries and like-minded documentation and research centres at the regional, national and international levels.
- To set up a library and resource centre, which is easily accessible for women and where they can meet, read, discuss, work and take books home.
- To provide a congenial forum where activists, researchers, students, journalists and all those concerned with women's issues can meet and discuss matters of common concern.
Since 1989 Aalochana has done a lot of work in the field they have chosen. We give below some samples of the work done by Aalochana.
