Cartoons and Jokes

When the educated, modern woman came on the scene, she became the focus of the media in many ways. Her way of dressing, her demeanour, and her activities (like driving a car or riding a bike) got written about in many ways. Certain qualities were attributed to the modern woman. It was assumed that she would not be able to cook, that she would be fashion-conscious and that she would lack some of the noble qualities of the traditional woman. The modern woman was considered superficial, lacking depth. Given below are some of the jokes, which appeared in Ananda Vikatan, a Tamil journal, in the fifties.
